Tiana 2009

prince naveen

Firstly, I’m going to start with the newly developed stereotype occurring with the men in Disney. Prince Naveen is a fun loving, flirty yet educated prince, in which every girl awes over. However, one thing different from the usual tall, dark and handsome prince is that he comes across as rather poor, and wanting to settle into a rich family, unlike pre 1960s Cinderella’s prince in a huge castle. Naveens character is rather like Aladdin’s in this case. Portraying men as stubborn, gold diggers only after one thing.. money to become successful.

The female traits are back again, the cleaning the dreaming. However, this time about starting a restaurant and not finding a man. Which in reality is what women desire, to independently be successful in life and not have to try and depend on a male.

Tiana is the first black princess, showing equality with all the different ethnicities of princesses (Mulan, Pocahontas, jasmine, Ariel). She isn’t dependant on marriage and finding a man to make her happy, she’s set on making her father proud and being successful with her own restaurant, the love life just happens to be a bonus to her.

This move is set in New orleans in the past. Where she kisses a frog but happens to turn into one as well, the two frogs then go on a JOURNEY to then FALL IN LOVE… which is a contrast to Pre1960 Disney films where they MEET then FALL IN LOVE INSTANTLY.
