Aurora 1959

Pre 1960s… typical female traits.. dependant on a man…. singing, cleaning, operatic voice. She depends on finding her man, in which she does, and they instantly fall in love at first sight. Nothing like the recent films of a Disney Princess.

This film includes a lot of feminism; Firstly, the gifts brought for the baby girl at the beginning includes the gift of ‘Beauty’. Showing that beauty is a gift that should be treasured and desired… what about the gift of intelligence or ‘bubbly personality’. aurora

“The greatest travesty in the depiction of women in any Disney film occurs in Sleeping Beauty. That travesty is the treatment of the Queen. The Queen, a woman who should be of intense importance in the lives of the people of her country, should be of intense importance in her family, is so unimportant as to not even rate her own name. She is always referred to in third person – “King Stefan and his Queen” by the narrator, “poor King Stefan and the Queen” to quote the fairies late in the film. She is never looked at, spoken directly to, or seen in any way as having any importance other than her role as Stefan’s wife. Even her daughter is not hers; Aurora is “Stefan’s child”. She has no identity. Her sole line in the entire movie is to ask Maleficent if she is offended. The Queen, the mother, has been entirely stripped of any semblance of personage, any semblance of humanity, to become simply a vessel for childbirth or an attractive toy on Stefan’s arm.” – A feminist critique of animation.

The way the King (the princess Auroras father) has arranged her life.. her house, her cradle for her future baby, and her babies future, bearing in ming that Princess Aurora is only 16 years old. This reflects the society at the time of the movie as it is set in historic periods, and portrays how woman were treated very well. Without a doubt their relationship (Aurora and her prince) enhanced a very fast paced relationship, love at first sight, not even getting to know each other. They fall in love after a song on how they desire beauty, and dreams. This compares to the newer princesses as they do not fall in love within 2 minutes, like Aurora. None of the older disney princesses did anything great to become a desirable role, just standing there and looking pretty. However, the newer princesses achieve something new in their lives (Post 1960s).

Even the female villain in Sleeping Beauty is portrayed in a negative view; bitchy, evil, elegant and controlling.
